    The Word of Forgiveness

The Word of Forgiveness Pastor Gabe Barber Text: Luke 23:26-38

    Matthew 5:43-45  ESV
43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'  44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
    Luke 23:34  ESV
And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
    I.            Jesus’ Word of Forgiveness Reveals His Attitude of SUBMISSION to THE FATHER.
    Matthew 9:2-6
2 And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven."  3 And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming."  4 But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts?  5 For which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'?  6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—he then said to the paralytic—"Rise, pick up your bed and go home."
II.            Jesus’ Word of Forgiveness Reveals His Attitude of CULPABILITY toward SINNERS.
    Psalm 19:12  ESV
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
    Luke 17:3-4  ESV
3 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him,  4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' you must forgive him."
III.            Jesus’ Word of Forgiveness Reveals His Attitude of UNCONDITIONAL LOVE toward MANKIND.
    Luke 23:34  ESV
And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
    Acts 3:13-18  ESV
13 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him.  14 But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,  15 and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses.  16 And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. 17 "And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers.  18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.
    1 John 1:9  ESV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

    The Cost of Discipleship

The Cost of Discipleship Pastor Gabe Barber Text:   Luke 9:57-62, 14:25-33

ALCC’s Mission Statement: “By God’s grace, Abundant Life Community Church is here to bring people to wholeness through God’s grace.” 2 Peter 1:5-8  ESV 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue,t and virtue with knowledge,  6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,  7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.  8 For if these qualitiest are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Hebrews 5:11-14  ESV 11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.  12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,  13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.  14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.   I.            Discipleship is TAKING IN and LIVING OUT the words of Jesus. Ephesians 4:14-16  ESV 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.  15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,  16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. Romans 6:1-2  ESV 1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?  2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Luke 14:27  ESV 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “Salvation is free, but discipleship will cost you your life.”

II.             Discipleship is a RADICAL CALL.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “I shall have no right to participate in the reconstruction of Christian life in Germany after the war if I do not share the trials of this time with my people.”

Luke 14:26-27, 33  ESV 26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.  27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. III.             Discipleship carries ETERNAL VALUE. 2 Timothy 4:7-8  ESV 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “I am sure of God’s hand and guidance…you must never doubt that I am thankful and glad to go the way which I am being led. My past life is abundantly full of God’s mercy, and, above all sin, stands the forgiving love of the Crucified.”

Matthew 11:28-30  ESV 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
